NOTE: FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR, HAVEN STREET ACADEMY WILL SERVE 3RD GRADE ONLY. OUR HOPE IS TO TAKE OUR 3RD GRADERS TO 4TH AND 5TH GRADES IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS, PREPARING THEM FOR RELEASE BACK INTO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
Recess is provided three times a day. It has been shown that frequent breaks make children ready to learn.
Lunch, which includes a recess period, lasts a total of one hour. It is not good for children to be rushed through eating their food, followed by being rushed back to the classroom to work again.
Ultimately, our goal is for children to enjoy school, as this will lead to them liking school and, therefore, being in a frame of mind conducive to assimilating more of what they are being taught.
ASSESSMENTS - Students' grades will be determined by a variety of teacher-created tests and projects. We are also looking into using i-Ready for reading, as the various assessments are acceptable to the school district as indicators of progress when students enter back into the public school system. However, we may also administer the SAT.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - AUGUST 10TH
Late Registrations Okay
THE SCHOOL DAY - Here is what your child's day will look like.
7:50-8:00 Arrival - Morning Work Morning work is typically a grammar and/or math warm-up.
8:00-9:30 Reading/Language Arts Reading for comprehension, reading for enjoyment, grammar instruction, and writing is encompassed in this block. The children can also expect overlap into other subjects as they read and write, as integration helps them to see the interrelationships between the things they are learning.
Our math focus is on mastering the traditional algorithms, going deeper rather than exploring the alternative algorithms found in the Common Core curriculum.
11:15-12:00 Soc. Studies/Science
These subjects are taught on alternating weeks. Social studies includes relevant history with contemporary applications, an understanding of sociology and how social relationships affect us, cultural geography, and basic economics. Science is presented in an interesting and exciting way, and will include occasional experiments.
These subjects are taught on alternating days.
The Holy Bible will be used to teach practical lessons in how to solve problems, what the correct attitudes to have are, historical perspectives, etc. This subject will be very discussion-oriented, encouraging children to explore the right way to live their lives.
