Haven Street

A Place for Kids and Teens

NOTE: FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR, HAVEN STREET ACADEMY WILL SERVE 3RD GRADE ONLY. OUR HOPE IS TO TAKE OUR 3RD GRADERS TO 4TH AND 5TH GRADES IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS, PREPARING THEM FOR RELEASE BACK INTO THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.

ABOUT HAVEN STREET ACADEMY -  We are a traditional school that helps students to master fundamental academic skills while steering away from the confusion so often caused by Common Core. We also teach the practical skills and principals upon which proper social development is based. In addition to this, we do not spend valuable learning time preparing to take a state test, choosing instead to use other means of assessing students' progress. Haven Street Academy follows the Sunshine State Standards.

HOMEWORK, LUNCH, & RECESS, ETC. - We think children need to relax in the evening, just like their parents do. Therefore, daily homework is NOT assigned. Exceptions can be made to reflect parents' wishes, but the general rule is no homework except when a project is assigned with several days to complete it.

Recess is provided three times a day. It has been shown that frequent breaks make children ready to learn.

Lunch, which includes a recess period, lasts a total of one hour. It is not good for children to be rushed through eating their food, followed by being rushed back to the classroom to work again.

Ultimately, our goal is for children to enjoy school, as this will lead to them liking school and, therefore, being in a frame of mind conducive to assimilating more of what they are being taught.

ASSESSMENTS - Students' grades will be determined by a variety of teacher-created tests and projects. We are also looking into using i-Ready for reading, as the various assessments are acceptable to the school district as indicators of progress when students enter back into the public school system. However, we may also administer the SAT.
2017-2018 CALENDAR - We will follow the same calendar as the public schools, taking the same vacations and days off. The first day of school is August 10th.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - AUGUST 10TH
